Australian distillery Archie Rose has released the third expression in its limited edition Smoked Cask Series, a Cinnamon Smoked Cask Single Malt Whisky. Launched earlier this year, the release continues the distillery’s experimental approach to smoke by shifting the focus from grains to cask treatment. The launch matters as it challenges traditional ideas of smoked whisky while offering collectors a rare, small-batch expression crafted using an Australian-first technique.
This third release places cinnamon at the centre of the flavour profile. The spice was carefully smoked to release aroma without burning, allowing its softer character to slowly infuse the oak during maturation. The result is a whisky layered with warm baking spice, tropical fruit, and charred pineapple notes. Developed in collaboration with one of Australia’s most respected coopers, the casks are designed to gently carry smoke through the wood rather than dominate the spirit. The innovation lies in using botanicals to shape smoke, creating a more aromatic and refined expression.
- Nose: Soft smoke, sweet cinnamon, gentle oak
- Palate: Warm baking spice, tropical fruit, hints of charred pineapple
- Finish: Long, dry, lightly smoky with lingering spice
“This series is all about reimagining what a smoked whisky can be,” says Dave Withers, master distiller at Archie Rose. “With this cinnamon-smoked cask single malt, the smoke is discreet, but the warm, sweet notes of carrot cake and raisin toast really shine through.”
As whisky drinkers look beyond peat-heavy styles, interest in subtle, botanical-led smoke is growing. The Smoked Cask Series answers that shift, offering a new way to explore smoke through aroma, texture, and balance.
Bottled at 51.9% ABV, Archie Rose Cinnamon Smoked Cask Single Malt Whisky is limited to 495 bottles. It is available via the distillery’s website, priced at AU$199 (US$132/£99).
